The Story of Shibam: From Yemen's Ancient Towers to Your Cup

If you've ever wondered where the name "Shibam" comes from, you're in for a fascinating story that stretches back over 1,700 years.

The Manhattan of the Desert

Deep in Yemen's Hadhramaut valley sits one of the world's most remarkable cities. Shibam is home to around 500 mud-brick tower houses, some rising over 100 feet into the sky — earning it the nickname "The Manhattan of the Desert."

These towers have stood for centuries, built with nothing more than sun-dried mud bricks, yet enduring through wars, floods, and the passage of time. They're a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the ingenuity of Yemeni builders.

Where Coffee Began

Yemen holds a unique place in coffee history. While the coffee plant originated in Ethiopia, it was Yemen where coffee was first cultivated as a crop and brewed as a beverage. The ancient port of Mocha (Al-Mokha) on Yemen's coast gave the world its most famous coffee name.

For centuries, Yemeni farmers have cultivated coffee on terraced mountainsides, using methods passed down through generations. The beans are sun-dried, hand-sorted, and roasted with care — a tradition that prioritizes quality and craftsmanship over speed and volume.

Why We Chose This Name

We named our company after Shibam because we believe in building things that last. Just as those ancient towers were constructed with care on strong foundations, every cup of coffee we serve is rooted in tradition and crafted with intention.

When you sip a Shibam Latte or a traditional Turkish coffee at our shop, you're not just drinking coffee — you're connecting with a tradition that spans centuries and continents.

Bringing It to Philadelphia

Our University City location is our way of sharing this heritage with one of America's great cities. Philadelphia has always been a city that values culture, community, and craftsmanship. That's exactly what we're about.

Whether you're a student pulling a late-night study session, a professional starting your morning, or a neighbor looking for a place to gather — we're here for you, serving coffee the way it was meant to be made.
